September was a huge month for Ryder- he started Kindergarten! As he has been with other new places and things, he was pretty nervous, but we talked about it with him a lot and he went into the school twice in August, so he was pretty good to go on the first day. I was able to bring him myself, so that was lucky. We walked over to his class and he waited with the other nervous kindergartners. I was pretty emotional about it all, maybe more than him! What's important is that he had a good first day and got his school year off to a good start. He rode the bus home and my mom was waiting for him at the bus stop, which we had visited the day before to make sure he would recognize it. The bus might have been one of his favorite parts, so that was good news!
Ryder likes to watch battle re-enactments and video game battle re-enactments (some historical, some not!) on Youtube and somehow through that he came across the Romans. Move over Redcoats, that was his new obsession for September. Unfortunately there isn't as much good kid-friendly info about the Roman army as there is about the Revolutionary era British army, so we haven't been able to find as much stuff to feed this obsession. He did like it so much, though, that he declared he would be a Roman for Halloween!
This year we had pumpkins in the garden. I bought and planted a carving size pumpkin plant and then we had a bunch of volunteer mini pumpkin plants from the mini pumpkins that the kids bought last year and then composted at the end of the fall. It was fun all summer to watch these pumpkin vines spread into the yard and sprout tiny little pumpkins everywhere. Finally at the end of September, we picked them. I figured we had 50 or so. After we picked them all and set them all up on the picnic table for sorting and counting, we discovered that we had 100! The kids had such a great afternoon picking and organizing them, and then they were a great decoration for our stairs!
Even though Summer was winding down, we still managed some beach days at the river after school and on the weekends. We also made our annual trip to the apple orchard to pick apples and eat donuts. Ryder picked a ton of apples and then ate his donuts very quickly. After that, he was all about a fun photoshoot in the pumpkin "patch"!
