Ryder has been making steady progress reading and it’s
really coming together now. I bought him
some learn-to-read level books and he’s been reading them this month. He’s been reading board books, but these have
more words than that, so it’s exciting to see him make progress. He really loves being able to read and he
reads words all the time, wherever he sees them. He also enjoys reading his new books out loud
to me and Vivien.
Ryder has been playing nicely with Vivien lately and has
been helping her to do things, like play the board games they play. One evening, Vivien was talking about reading,
so Ryder made a list of what she needs to do to learn to read. He told her that she needs to know the sounds
of the letters, learn sight words and then learn trick words. He gave her some examples and wrote some
letters and words out for her. She was
interested, but not quite old enough to focus and participate, so he got a
little frustrated! It was very
thoughtful of him and I think it would’ve worked if she was a little older!
Just like last year, Ryder flew through his class Valentine
list. He went through in one sitting and
wrote all twenty-plus Valentine cards for his class. He enjoyed choosing the squishies to tape to his Valentines too. Then on Valentine’s Day, there was a little
issue at school and his Valentine’s never got handed out, so he had to bring
them in the next day. The week of
Valentine’s Day, I bought a bouquet of white carnations and we did a little
dying project with them, which Ryder loved.
I split up the bouquet and they each got a few vases of flowers to
color. Anything with food coloring is a
huge hit around here and this was no different.
We haven’t had that much winter weather around here yet,
which was disappointing to the kids. One
night we were expecting a small storm, so we got everything done early so that
when it got here and went right out to enjoy the weather! Ryder had a great time playing in the snow in
the dark, making angels, throwing snowballs and taking a little walk. It mostly melted by morning, so it was a good
thing we went out!
